Take the first three enlisted rank exams to be promoted by your CO once you satisfy the time-in-grade for each enlisted rank through E-6.

I’ve been assigned to a ship, station, or bivouac, now what do I do?

You’ve just joined TRMN and been given your first assignment. You are now a member of a ship, station, or bivouac. Your commanding officer already welcomed you and provided you some basic information about tRMN and your assignment. But now what? Your CO may have talked to you about getting promoted and taking your rating exams. You’ve joined the TRMN Facebook groups and you see people talking about taking their rank exams, rating exams, and getting their Space Warfare Pin. But what does all this mean? What do you do? How do you start?

The first thing you need to do is download the BuTrain Student Manual from the documents section of thw TRMN website ( This manual is important as it presents the schools and classes and their prerequisites. Read through the manual to get familiar with all BuTrain has to offer and to know what prerequisites are required before you can take an exam.

Though you may take exams from any service, it is best to start with the Basic Enlisted exam or first level exam for the service you are in. To request your first exam click on Academies > Course Request Form on the TRMN website.

You will receive your first exam via email within seven days of your request along with a copy of the Honorverse Compendium, which you can use to complete your exams.

The exams are all open book, meaning you can use any of the resources listed on the exam instructions (or in the box on the next page) to answer the questions. However, you cannot get the answers from someone else. The work must be your own.

Once you are done with your exam, send it back to your instructor via email in an editable format. Your instructor will grade the exam within seven days and send it back, along with a completion certificate and the next exam in the series, if applicable.

If you have any questions while taking the exam, please ask your instructor! They are there to help you learn. However, please remember, do not share the Honorverse Compendium, your exam, or answers with anyone, even your CO. Your CO will be able to see your grade in the Medusa database, as will you.

After you pass your first enlisted exam, you may begin taking specialty exams while continuing to take your enlisted and officer exams. In fact, you can request and take as many exams at once as long as you meet the prerequisites for each.

As you continue your studies, the exams will become harder and require you to do more research as they cover many topics in the Honorverse, TRMN, history, math, and science.

Earn your Space Services Deployment Ribbon when you complete your first enlisted exam, if you are deployed to a ship.

Earn your Armed Forces Services Medal when you complete your first officer exam.

Complete exams for a rating so you’re CO can change your rank to include your rating (for example, Gunner 2nd Class instead of Spacer 2nd Class).

Take rating exams at the Technical Specialties College (TSC) to earn the Space Warfare Pin.

Award RMN Space Warfare Qual Enlisted  Award RMN Space Warfare Qual Officer

Keep taking exams across BuTrain (from any BuTrain institution) to earn the Manticore Combat Action Medal.

I have not heard back from my instructor about an exam, what do I do?

Instructors at BuTrain should respond to a request for an exam or with a graded exam within 24 hours. This can be a simple acknowledgment.

Instructors have 7 days to send you an exam or grade your exam.

NOTE: Instructors will post in the RMN Bureau of Training FB group and on the TRMN Academies website under Announcements  when they are off and unable to grade exams. Students should check these pages to see if their instructor has posted that they are off. If so, they should wait until the instructor returns and give them a few days to catch up. (You can search this group for the name of your exam.)

If a student does not hear from the instructor within 7 days (provided the instructor has not posted they are off) the student should send the instructor another email and copy the instructor's supervisor

If the student does not get a response to this email within 24 hours they should send another email to those same people adding in the next person up in the chain of command and the appropriate chief of staff.

If the student does not get a response to this email within the next 24 hours they are to repeat step 3 adding on the next person in the chain of command (and appropriate chief of staff) until they  get to the 6SL. Hopefully, a student will get a response well before getting to the 6SL. At no time should a student wait weeks before contacting someone when they are not getting a response. Many times we do not know there are problems until someone tells us. We will immediately take steps to remedy any problems and get the exams out to students and graded. If at any time a student doesn't know what to do or whom to contact they can always contact the  chief of staff for the school as follows:

as you continue your studies at BuTrain

As you start to take exams or continue your studies, here are a few things to help you:

    • Create a folder for your exams on your computer or on a cloud storage drive. A good option is to use the Google Drive associated with a Gmail email address and Google Docs. The Google Drive, with Google Docs, is free, easy to use, accessible from multiple devices, and does not require you to have any programs installed to use it.
    • Create subfolders in your main exam folder for each school or type of exam you take. Keep a copy of your submitted and graded exams and completion certificate in these folders. Your exam information will be reflected in your Medusa profile but you don’t want to take a chance that this information could be lost.
    • Join the RMN Bureau of Training Facebook group at Use this group to ask general questions (not specific exam questions) and see if your instructor is on temporary leave. There are also a number of good resources in the Files section, such as the BuTrain Faculty List and BuTrain Exams Response Timelines.
    • Always provide your best answer to the essay questions. The length of each essay will vary but you shouldn’t do more than a paragraph or two for the earlier exams.
    • When you are taking exams in a series, such as the enlisted rank exams, there is no need to request each subsequent exam. The next exam will be sent to you with the completed exam, provided you meet the prerequisites. If you do not meet the prerequisites for the next exam at that time you must contact the instructor using the official email to request it once you do. For example, if you are taking your specialty exams and get your C exam back but have not completed your first officer exam, which is required for the D exam, you will have to request it after you pass your O-1 exam.
    • If you have any special needs when taking exams such as physical or learning challenges, please let your instructor know immediately so they may make the appropriate arrangements to help you succeed.
